A zippered, soft-lined top compartment holds essentials like your sunglasses, keys, passport, etc. The padded shoulder straps and the sternum strap can be stowed under magnet-closing flaps, so they won't get caught on things if you need to check the bag. Low-profile grab handles on the sides make it easy to pull the pack from the overhead compartment, no matter which way it's positioned.
